Why Preconception Health Matters

Most women are told to “just start trying” when they’re ready to conceive — and if it doesn’t work after 12 months, then they’ll get evaluated. But by that point, you’ve already lost a year and possibly missed dozens of subtle signs that your body wasn’t ready.

Women’s preconception health is one of the most overlooked areas of medicine. As Dr. Naomi Whittaker, MD, OBGYN, has said:

“Women’s preconception health is a goldmine of preventative medicine opportunities.”

And yet, conventional medicine tends to be reactive instead of proactive.. No education. No labs. No guidance.

And before you read any further- if you haven’t downloaded my Free 11 RED FLAGS IF YOU’RE TTC GUIDE- then do that now!!!!!!!! This is going to be all the information you need to know before TTC!

Preconception health isn’t just about taking a prenatal. It’s about:

  • Understanding your cycle as a vital sign
  • Supporting your thyroid, gut, and blood sugar
  • Rebuilding nutrient stores (often depleted from birth control)
  • Reducing inflammation and toxin load
  • And giving your nervous system the rest and support it needs

Your body doesn’t flip a switch when you see a positive pregnancy test. Conception is a continuation of the health you walk into pregnancy with.

The Cost of Ignoring Preconception Health

Poor preconception health has been linked to:

  • Higher infertility risk
  • Increased miscarriage and stillbirth
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome
  • Nutrient-depleted pregnancies
  • Poor egg and sperm quality
  • Poor fetal outcomes

By contrast, addressing these issues before you conceive gives your body the time it needs to:

  • Build nutrient stores
  • Stabilize blood sugar and hormones
  • Repair gut function
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Detox environmental toxins

It’s about laying the foundation—not playing catch-up later.

Common Red Flags Before TTC

Unfortunately, women aren’t taught to look for these warning signs. Some include:

  • Irregular cycles or short luteal phases (<10 days)
  • Lack of fertile cervical mucus
  • PMS, low libido, or painful periods
  • Chronic fatigue, bloating, or digestive issues
  • Acne, hair loss, brittle nails
  • Anxiety, mood swings, or brain fog

Each of these can be a clue that deeper hormonal or metabolic issues are at play—issues that can and should be addressed before trying to conceive.

What Lab Work Can Tell You

Functional preconception labs are one of the most empowering tools you can use. They don’t just tell you if you’re “normal,” they reveal if your body is actually optimal for conception.

Some key markers to check include:

  • Blood sugar & insulin resistance: fasting glucose, fasting insulin, HbA1c, C-peptide
  • Thyroid health: TSH, free T4, free T3, reverse T3, thyroid antibodies
  • Inflammation markers: CRP, homocysteine
  • Nutrient status: ferritin, vitamin D, B12, zinc, magnesium, selenium

Running these labs ahead of time can catch red flags that might otherwise get missed until you’ve already struggled with infertility or miscarriage.

Myth vs. Truth: Preconception Health

Too many women have been fed outdated or oversimplified advice. Let’s set the record straight:

Myth 1: “You just need to take a prenatal.”
Truth: Prenatals are a safety net, not a root-cause fix. Nutrient depletion, blood sugar issues, thyroid imbalances, and gut health need targeted support that prenatals alone can’t cover.

Myth 2: “If you’re healthy enough to get your period, you’re healthy enough to get pregnant.”
Truth: Having a period doesn’t always mean you’re having an optimal ovulation/hormones are optimal for conception—or that your hormones are balanced. Cycle patterns matter. Did you know that 30% of women with “regular” cycles have underlying ovulatory dysfunction?

Myth 3: “Just start trying for a year, and if it doesn’t happen, then get checked.”
Truth: That approach wastes valuable time. If you have  red flags like irregular cycles, pms, fatigue, or painful periods this can point to deeper imbalances that affect fertility and these should start to be investigated and addressed PRIOR TO TRYING TO CONCIEVE.

Myth 4: “Fertility struggles are mostly a woman’s issue.”
Truth: Up to 40–50% of infertility cases involve male factors. Preconception health matters for men too. This is why in couples struggling with infertility we offer male support inside our 1:1 program.

Myth 5: “IVF , IUI, or ovulation induction meds  will fix the problem if you can’t get pregnant naturally.”
Truth: These technologies bypass symptoms but don’t address the underlying causes of infertility. Did you know: if you go into IUI, IVF, or ovulation induction medications (clomid or letrozole) with underlying preconditions like insulin resistance, inflammation, or oxidative stress the research shows you are much less likely to conceive or if you do conceive, have a higher risk of miscarriage and pregnancy complications. Optimizing health improves both natural and assisted outcomes.

Myth 7: “Acne, PMS, or period pain are just normal parts of being a woman.”
Truth: They may be common, but they are not normal. They signal underlying imbalances that deserve attention.

What Preconception Health Should Look Like

Instead of “just trying for a year,” true preconception care should involve:

  • Charting your cycle & noting red flags
  • Optimizing blood sugar through diet, exercise, and sleep
  • Running functional labs (thyroid, hormones, nutrient status, inflammation)
  • Supporting critical nutrients with food & supplements (magnesium, zinc, vitamins A, D, E, C, B vitamins, selenium, iron, omega-3s)
  • Assessing gut health and addressing imbalances
  • Reducing toxin exposure where possible
  • Supporting nervous system health (stress management, sleep, calm eating)

The Future of Fertility Care

And here’s the truth: women are smart. They’re starting to demand more than just IVF. They want root-cause care. They deserve a medical system that educates and equips them to build a strong foundation before they even start trying.

Imagine how different infertility, miscarriage, and pregnancy outcomes could look if we started addressing red flags earlier. What if we taught women how to strengthen their fertility before they tried to conceive?
