Okay I am NOT one to follow health trends- but I do love the collagen trend!
Okay but first what actually IS collagen?
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, making up about 30% of all proteins. It is a crucial component of connective tissues, which include tendons, ligaments, skin, muscles, bones, and cartilage.
Collagen can actually be obtained from dietary sources, such as animal skin and bones (often used in making bone broth). Collagen supplements are typically hydrolyzed, meaning the collagen has been broken down into smaller peptides that are easier for the body to absorb.
So again, keep in mind collagen is a protein! I personally use it daily in my coffee for several reasons:
- I love all the benefits collagen provides (deets below)
- It comes unflavored so I don’t even taste it (I really can’t find any protein powders I like)
- There’s only 1 ingredient- collagen
- It boosts my daily protein intake (which is very

Okay so what’s the benefit of utilizing collagen??
Protein Source: Collagen is a protein, and adequate protein intake is essential for healthy hormones, blood sugar regulation, muscle growth, skin health, fertility, and even pregnancy.
Skin Health: Collagen is a major component of the skin. It helps maintain skin elasticity, hydration, and firmness. As we age, collagen production decreases, leading to wrinkles and dryness. Supplementing with collagen can potentially improve skin appearance and reduce signs of aging. It may also improve acne.
Glycine Content: Collagen supplements contain the amino acid glycine, which plays a role in the synthesis of hormones and neurotransmitters. Glycine is involved in the production of serotonin, which can affect mood and sleep patterns, and it also supports liver function, potentially aiding in hormone metabolism. Liver detox being especailly important for regulating estrogen levels and efficiently remove toxins and waste products.
Gut Health: Collagen can help support gut health by strengthening the protective lining of the digestive tract. This can potentially improve digestion and reduce inflammation in the gut.
A healthy gut is crucial for proper hormone metabolism and balance. By supporting gut health, collagen may indirectly contribute to hormonal balance.
Bone Health: Collagen is a key component of bones, contributing to their structure and strength. Some research indicates that collagen supplements may help prevent bone loss and increase bone mineral density, especially in postmenopausal women.
Muscle Mass: Collagen is also found in muscles and provides structure to muscle tissues. While more research is needed, some studies suggest that collagen supplements may help increase muscle mass in conjunction with resistance training. Muscle mass is extremely important for healthy blood sugar levels, which is a foundation to hormone health and fertility.
Anti-inflammatory Effects: Chronic inflammation can damage cells and contribute to hormone imbalances like PCOS, infertility, miscarriage, PMS, painful periods, acne, dgestive issues, etc etc. Collagen has anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce inflammation.
Hair and Nail Health: Collagen is a building block for hair and nails. Supplementing with collagen may help strengthen brittle nails and promote hair growth and thickness.
Enhances Antioxidant Defense: Collagen contains antioxidants such as proline and hydroxyproline, which can help neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress- which is very beneficial for overall hormone production and egg quality/fertility.
